CHAPTER 12 | CHOICE

“Liven!” Austrella’s voice echoed through the snowy woods as she called out desperately.

Panic surged through her as she stumbled through the snow, her heart pounding at every step.

What had happened to him? She couldn’t figure out why his powers backfired, or so it seemed. The memory of him being thrown away by the force haunted her, and she couldn’t bear the thought of something happening to him.

Austrella searched, her breaths coming in short gasps as she moved through the woods. “Liven, where—” She gasped, stopping in her tracks at once.

She spotted him lying on the ground not so far from her. “Liven!” Her voice laced with fear as she screamed and rushed to his side.

He was sprawled on the snowy ground, his body shaking as he struggled to sit upright. Austrella fell beside him, reaching out to help him. “W-what happened? What’s wrong?” Her voice trembled with frenetic worry.

Liven didn’t respond as he attempted to sit upright again, and Austrella helped him. He slid backwards to get the nearest tree behind him and leaned against it. He appeared very tired, chest heaving heavily, and he was virtually panting. She moved closer to him, holding his hands, her eyes filled with fear.

“What happened? Tell me.” Her heart ached at his sight.

Whatever he did to save her had caused him pain.

Liven’s eyes fluttered open and closed constantly. He managed to say, “I… I… it was… backfired… a-and…”

Austrella’s eyes widened as she processed his words. “What? Why?”

“Distract me,” he implored in a whisper, his eyes squeezing closed as if he were in pain.

“What?” she asked, baffled, moving her hands to hold his beautiful face now drenched in pain.

Liven opened his eyes faintly, whispering desperately, “Dis-distract me. I-I made them… feel fear… pain and… powerless… and it backfired. I feel—distract me.”

Austrella scanned her head frantically for something to distract him. “Um… Oh! W-we’re going back to the palace together and I’m, I’m coming with you.” Words tumbled out her mouth in a rush. “I won’t leave you again—”

“Distract me,” Liven repeated, wincing in pain.

Tears welled in her eyes. She searched for something that would provide relief… something powerful enough to make one forget everything. But she didn’t know what. “We’re… we’re going to… um—host a ball!” She uttered the words in her frantic quest, but his pain seemed to persist. “A-a… private ball, for just you and I, and we’re going to have—”

“Distract—”

Austrella captured Liven’s lips in a desperate, passionate kiss, with his face between her palms. It wasn’t just about distraction; it was something she had wanted to do since their kiss in the rain. Her emotions overwhelmed her as she kissed him, feeling the warmth of his mouth against her own.

She could feel his shock, but almost immediately, he kissed her back in equal favor and deepened the kiss, his fingers touching her elbows. She couldn’t resist herself, she kissed him again, a bit too firmly.

She pulled away slowly, to find his eyes already upon her, but no longer drenched in pain.
